THE HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

                                       WHAT IS DIGESTION?
Digestion is  the break down of food substances into simple and absorbable forms that can be used by the body.
Digestion is also the complex process of turning the food you eat into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth and repair of body cells.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
The digestive system is a collection organs that aid in the digestion process.  These organs are broadly subdivided into two namely:
1. ORGANS OF THE ALIMENTARY CARNAL:  they include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, rectum and anus
2. ACCESSORY ORGANS: they include the salivary glands, liver , gall bladder, and pancreas.

ROLE OF ENZYMES IN THE DIGESTION OF FOOD

Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts.  A catalyst  regulates the rate at which chemical reactions proceed in living organisms without itself being altered in the process.

A fundamental task of proteins is to act as enzymes catalysts that increase the rate of virtually all the chemical reactions within cells
Some enzymes and the role they play in the human body are shown in the table below:
